The skilled therapist has many tools and techniques to address oedema (swelling). The goal is to prevent excess fluid from pooling in the interstitial space, and to support the lymphatic system to transport the fluid back into the blood stream for waste removal. Our therapists are highly trained in the science of oedema (swelling) management and therapeutic techniques to reduce it; whether the cause of the oedema (swelling) is due to inflammation or circulation. The techniques commonly utilized at AHHT include:
- Cold therapy
- Compression bandaging
- Compression garments
- Manual oedema mobilization
- Contrast bathing
- ‘Chip’ bags – sponge filled bag to massage out the fluid
- Movement to activate muscle pumps
